Week 12 - 12 Nov. 2013 Plagiarism

Students of the sciences need to understand what plagiarism is.  A student in the US could be expelled from his university for plagiarizing.  You could lose your job and have all of your·research discredited.

Plagiarism is the representation of the words or ideas of another as your own in any academic work.
o   This includes copying and pasting from the internet.
o   This includes copying answers from a classmate!
·         To avoid plagiarism, every direct quotation must be identified by “quotation marks” and must be cited properly according to the accepted format.
·         When any source is paraphrased or summarized you MUST provide proper citation.

 Plagiarism is stealing!

From Rimmer et al. 2005:
A program of training and certification of local park guides and rangers should be instituted. The regular involvement of such individuals in park activities will help ensure their commitment to Macaya’s conservation. Proper equipment and educational training will be essential components of such a program.

Not plagiarism

My paper is about environmental education.  “A program of training and certification of local park guides and rangers should be instituted.  Proper equipment and educational training will be essential components of such a program.” (Rimmer et al. 2005).

My paper is about environmental education.  I will use Macaya as an example.  Educating park rangers there is important to its conservation. The rangers need to be involved so they will be committed to conservation (Rimmer et al. 2005).

My paper is about environmental education.  Rimmer et al. (2005) state that educating park rangers at Macaya is important to its conservation, and they also need proper equipment.
